Wider Use Of Statins in Question

A study conducted by British researchers has shown that there is no evidence that prescribing ‘cholesterol lowering’ medicines, will reduce any chance of death in the short term.
The drugs (known as statins) are widely used for the prevention of heart disease among high-risk individuals. They are also used for people that have heart disease. Millions have used the drug which has been credited with preventing numerous heart attacks.
However, Professor Kausik Ray and his team from the University of Cambridge found little proof that statins helped people in a risky situation. The Professor said; “There is little evidence that statins reduce the risk of dying from any cause in individuals without heart disease.”
These findings were conducted with test of over 65,000 people, half of them taking statins and the other half taking a placebo, as is the case in many medical tests. The 11 studies were carried out in just over 3 and a half years, in which 2793 of the candidates died, 1447 on the placebo and 1346 on the statins. The study also found that while taking the tables does lower cholesterol levels this did not have an effect on the amount of deaths.
Another study published just a month ago found that there are many side effects that statins can cause. These included heightened risks of malfunction to the liver and kidney.
This finding comes as terrible news too many as heart attacks though heart disease is the biggest killer in the world, and an increasing problem in 3rd world countries.
