Enfamil Formula Switch After Similac Formula 2010 Recall?

Enfamil Formula Switch After Similac Formula 2010 Recall? – With Similac recalling nearly 5 million of their infant formulas, many parents are worried about the future quality of the product and are looking to switch to another infant formula. One of the more popular choices is Enfamil, a popular infant formula that contains many of the same things that are contained inside Similac. The vitamins and minerals when compared to one another are basically the same, and will have nearly the same effect on your child.

Enfamil does contain more levels of DHA and AHA when compared to Similac. It contains 17 milligrams while Similac only contains around 11 milligrams. Most parents choose Enfamil because it does not pack down like Similac, and therefore takes the guesswork out of whether or not you have stirred the powder correctly before scooping.

However, Similac does have a few upsides to it that Enfamil does not. A recent study suggested that formulas with fat blend including palm olein oil will cause less frequent and firmer stools in infants. Similac claims that their formula has 50% more calcium absorption than Enfamil and the company has also claimed that their new formula does not have as many bubbles and therefore the child will experience less gassy buildup.

Both brands are pretty much the same and have very little differences between one another. If you are worried about the future quality of Similac, then switching brands might be the best option for you.

Similac recall only concerns powder products, liquid ones are safe for now according to the company.

And what about the polydextrose in Enfamil that the company has managed to just gloss over and not inform the public about? As a Mom, I was not happy to learn that polydextrose – a substance not naturally found in any foods and chemically manufactured from an artificial sweetener – had been added to my baby’s formula without my knowledge! I had to learn this from my Dr and after my own research, found that this “polydextrose” is widely used in diet bars and sugar free products. I certainly didn’t want the same artifical ingredients found in atkins bars included in my baby’s formula! These types of bars are known to have a laxative effect even in adults! My baby’s diarrhea resolved when I switched and she is much better for it – from personal experience, to any consider switching right away to Enfamil, beware! You might get more problems than you bargained for.

    • Molly says:

Maria- I have 3 children who all used Enfamil and are all healthy!! None had any problems or issues with Enfamil at all. I would tell parents to beware of similac…beatles and beatle larvae are not an ingredient I would want to risk my baby digesting..I haven’t seen a recall in Enfamil (at least for the past 8 years that I have had babies.) Kind of an easy decision if you ask me..

    • amy says:

you need to ask your MD about all the sucrose in Similac formulas. I am sure you don’t want your baby having table sugar in their formula. Polydextrose is a carbohydrate that has been used in Europe for over 10 years to help babies experience stools closer to breast feed babies. All European studies were touted by similac when they launched their prebiotics and yet their formula only contained one prebiotic GOS…very misleading.

    • Elizabeth says:

There are those mothers (who don’t have a potty mouth to get their point across) that stop producing naturally for whatever reason – stress, nature, ect. I’m sure they would love to give their babies the best (breast milk) but may not be able to. As far as the polydextrose, that’s not the only thing Similac doesn’t have. Similac does NOT contain palm oil like the rest of the formulas do. The Similac recall doesn’t mean it’s a bad product plus they have alternatives (ready to feed). For those of us “slime ball” “lazy” “disgusting” moms who truly care for their children.. do what you think is best and if anything, consult your pediatrician if you’re concerned with what to do or have questions about formulas.

  2. Dawn says:

HOW ABOUT BREAST MILK YOU SLIME BALLS? Jesus! What will it take for mothers to stop being so damn lazy and irresponsible to do the normal, natural, BEST thing for their children? fucking disgusting. Don’t switch to another formula you airheads, get some real milk with real nutrients that have real benefits to your children AND TO YOU!

    • Ian says:

Dawn, some mothers cannot produce enough milk when breast feeding their babies. They in turn have to supplement their baby with formula not by choice but out of necessity. This by no means means that they are “lazy”, “irresponsible”, or are “airheads”. Supplementing is recommended by many pediatricians if a woman’s milk production is lacking. I suggest for future reference that you do some research and get your facts straight before firing off judgmental comments to others.

      • maria says:

I agree with you Dawn that breastmilk is best BUT some moms just don’t make enough. I use both because not matter what I have tried I just don’t make enough. To call someone “lazy” when you have no idea how they care for their child is pretty ignorant.

    • Megan says:

Dawn, not all mothers are physically able to breastfeed. There are many medical reasons that may prevent a mother from breastfeeding. Even if there is not a medical reason, it does not mean the mother is lazy. Be a little sensitive and stop being so judgmental. Take a look in the mirror…do you see the perfect mother…I doubt it. Be thankful you are able to breastfeed if that is your choice.

    • Julia says:

Dawn – Not everyone who uses formula wants to use formula. I would have loved to continue breastfeeding my daughter, but I have a high-paced, time sensitive job that does not allow me time to express breast milk at work. So please stop your self-righteous, judegmental rants because you don’t know how hard it is for moms to stop breastfeeding.

    • Donna says:

Wow Dawn. Its very obvious who the ignorant slime ball is here. Let me know how you feel about formula when your baby is 5 days old with blood in her urine because she is becoming dehydrated after your body fails to make enough milk…and despite every effort to increase supply it continues to be low. I think you would be glad that there was something out there to supplement with so your baby can live. I have been pumping for 11 mos. now just so that my daughter can have at least half of her diet from breastmilk. Congratulations that brestfeeding was easy for you. I know a lot of people that have struggled for multiple reasons. I hope it is easier with my next child. Don’t pass judgement on people and their situations that you know absolutely nothing about.

    • Ran says:

Well you know, some mothers can not produce enough breast milk.

    • Elizabeth says:

Good parenting skills Dawn. You must be a stay at home mom that has all day to take her time to breast feed whenever. It seems you do not have any idea what it’s like in the real world. Not every woman is capable of breast feeding their child’s entire life. I’m sure because of all your “real nutrients that have real benefits to your children AND TO YOU!,” your child will grow up wonderfully with such a diverse vocabulary thanks to mom.

    • rene says:

wow Dawn how dare you catagorize All women who feed formula to their infants. You should be ashamed of yourself for posting such a mean spirited and cowardly comment. I wont stoop to your level but i think you need to take your foot out of your mouth and think of women who have a problem that physically restricts them from breastfeeding! I suggest you post an apology

    • Crystal says:

You have some kind of language on you. A formula fed baby has nothing to do with laziness on the parents part. Based on the way you replied, I’m going to say you are too lazy, not only to use “grown up” language, but to also do your research and see that formula has advanced so much over the years that it is now very close to breast milk. You need to educate yourself, which I seriously doubt would happen, next time you decided to voice such a lousy opinion.

    • Erin says:

Dawn- how about those of us who do breast feed but need to supplement? I am a mother of premature twins. I have been pumping, breast feeding, and having to supplement since they were born 8 months ago. I do not think I am a SLIME BALL or “damn lazy”…I am doing what is best of my children and what the DOCTORS of NICU required for them. Have a clue and think before you post- many people using formula aren’t using it simply because it is easy, they are doing it for the health of their kids.

    • veronica says:

Well dawn, we are all not cows like you. Some of us are not able to produce the amount of milk that our babies need. So before you speak…think. You dumb ass.

    • mandy says:

Hey dawn HOW about YOU learn to watch what you say I breast fed for a month but didn’t produce enough milk I had a really rough pregnancy I had to supplement and I felt horrible that I couldn’t breast feed but some of us aren’t as lucky as you ok and if a mother feels that formula is the best thing for her child then let her be the judge of that not you

    • Jessica says:

Not every mother is able to breast feed and it is people like you that make us feel bad about it!

    • mommy of 4 says:

I am a mother of 4, i have breast fed all my babies my last child is 2 1/2 months he was breast fed 1 month then i got sick an infection from my c-section it almost took my life. the doctor’s didn’t properly clean me out. while in the hospital a 2nd time i pumped the whole time….had to dump my milk due to meds. in the end i had to stop breast feeding i was not happy with it but it was best for my baby. you have too much anger it’s a woman’s choice to breast feed or formula sometimes as mother ‘s we don’t have a choice.

    • CASEY says:

      DAWN,
I FOUNDYOU COMENET VERY DISTURBING AND IMATURE, I WANTED TO BREAST FEED MY 2ND REALLY BAD AS WELL AS CLOTH DIAPERING HER.
WELL 2 MONTHS AFTER WE FOUND OUT WE WERE EXPECTING OUR MIRACLE BABY, MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY AND I WAS PUT ON BEDREAST AND WEEKLY INJECTONS JUST SO I WOULDN’T GO INTO PRE TERM LABOR BUT 2 MONTHS BEFORE HER DUE DATE I HAD A PLACENTA ABRUPTION AND LOST ALOT OF BLOOD MY DAUGHTER WASIN THE NICU FRO 4 MONTHS, I WAS EXTREMLY DEPRESSED AND HAD TO BE PUT ON MEDICATION AND THERE FOR I COULD’T BREATFEED, SO F**CK OFF I THINK YOU NEED TO HEEP YOUR OPIONS TO YOUR SELF ABOUT MOTHERS WHO DON’T BREASTFEED, FORMU;A IS THE NEXT BEST THING AND MY DAUGHTER IS THRIVING. SHUT YOUR MOTH BIZNATCH

    • Michelle says:

      Dawn

You are completely insenstive to those of us who haved tried everything – AND I MEAN EVERYTHING- to nurse our babies and give them the best. I struggled for 4 months to produce enough milk for my son. My milk dried up quickly after an illness and then formula was my only choice.

You should be grateful that you were able to provide your children breastmilk. Consider encouraging other mothers rather than tearing them down with your thoughtless and selfish comments. AS MOTHERS WE ARE ALL TRYING TO DO RIGHT BY OUR KIDS!

    • Blessed says:

It’s great that you were able to breastfeed – it would have been a great gift for us if we were able to breastfeed – our little one was a blessing in disguise who showed up after our fertility doctor told us he was done trying – there was no way we would ever even carry to term! So unfortunately for the few and far between who are not able to breastfeed, we have to put up with great assumptions that every mother will have breastmilk.
Thanks for the great comment :)

    • Joy says:

Dawn…. You are serioulsy stupid and I hope you don’t have any children with a mouth like that and lack of brain cells.

    • lilly says:

Dawn.. seriously if anything you are the “airhead!” Yes we all know that breast milk is best for our babies but some do not have the blessing to breastfead. My son is 5 months and I constantly take him to the doctor and constantly have to change his formula. When he was born I tried to breatfead. I was 100000% sure I was going to breastfead but after a long painful 3 weekz of tring to get atleast one once of milk out of my breast I had no choice but to give my Jo formula. I cry everytime I see my son suffer from constipation and gas cramps because of his formula. He was only 4 weeks old when I had to take him to the ER because he had bloody stool due to the formula (similac). I cried so much and I felt like such a failer as a mother because I wasn’t breastfeading. So don’t be ignorant and name call moms who don’t breastfead. You’re the disgusting one for attacking innocent moms with your cruel words.

    • Shut up!!! says:

Before you start talking sh*t about mothers, you need to realize that there are some, or many, mothers who cannot produce enough breastmilk for their child. These mothers doesn’t easily decide on formula to feed their child, but when all else fails, we’d rather feed our child formula than let him/her die of starvation! Breastmilk sounds like such a “natural” thing to have and produce, but it isn’t the case for everyone. And it doesn’t mean that the mother has done something wrong, it just means that the mother’s body can’t produce enough breastmilk to depend on only this to feed their child. So before you start talking sh*t and calling people names, you need to be open-minded about some mothers’ decision!!

    • susan says:

Well what about the mothers who dont produce the milk? I have been trying too get pregnant for 17 years and when i finally did i couldnt wait to breastfeed but because i had breast surgery i couldnt produce enough milk..I am not lazy by far really disappointed to say the least….

    • To Dawn the IDIOT says:

Gosh you are so stupid! Did you post that thinking youd have a bunch of breastfeeding mothers behind you singing your parises? Its a few months after your comment and people are still furious. You must be the most bored cruel uneducated woman with lots of time on her hands Ive ever heard of. Congrats to you for having such a small narrow mind. Oh I forgot to call you a coward you can post something like that but have no guts to go back and defend it; guess you must have figured you put your foot in your mouth and swallowed to find and hanging ot you ass. You were wrong to post that remember the internet is forever. Just be glad your emails not posted

    • Sakia says:

WOW DAWN…..Don’t pass judgement on people and their situations that you know absolutely nothing about. What a nasty little witch you are. I feel sorry for you.

  3. Trisha says:

Hey Dawn…don’t be so quick to judge others. Not all of us CAN breastfeed. It has nothing to do with being lazy OR irresponsible – some mothers CAN’T breastfeed for a number of different reasons. I can’t because of a medication I need to take daily and I don’t need ignorant people like you making assumptions that simply aren’t true. By the way…not that it matters, but I’m an OB nurse. If you’re going to make comments at least do the medical research behind it.

  4. rebecca says:

Oh wow. Ok I use enfamil newborn and my baby loves it and he does just fine on it. dawn don’t be a bitch every mother is entitled to take care of their babies how they please abd how they feel fit. I breastfeed but you know what? He doesn’t gain weight and get enough just from me so formula is how I keep my baby happy and healthy. Also parents who adopt don’t really have a choice in that matter do they? Please think before you post stuff like that.

  5. Julia says:

Also, some moms can’t breastfeed because they don’t have an abundant supply. I have friends who stopped producing milk after a week or 2.

  6. Janet says:

To the woman-Dawn- with the nice language. So you breast feed your infant, but have the mouth of a trucker!!! Nice switch. Some moms can’t breast feed-smart one. They need comfort in knowing that the formula is safe!

  7. Michele says:

I agree with Dawn. Breastfeeding is the best option. I understand that some mothers may not be able to produce milk but everyone should give it a try. Yes its not easy and can sometimes be an inconvenience but in the end its the BEST for the baby! I have been doing it for 5 months now and i am so happy i have continued with it considering the recent Similac recall. People need to do whatever it takes to continue to breastfeed as long as possible.

  8. Pathetic says:

    Dawn,
WOW, maybe you need to get off your high-horse. I can’t believe they allowed your comment to be published, with your excellent word choice!

What do you want me to do? Allow my child to starve? I have tried everything to get my milk supply up. Fenugreek pills, constant pumping – sometimes I pumped for an hour! I did everything in my power to breastfeed, so is it too much for me to ask to have safe formula to use to supplement????? There was nothing lazy about my situation. I probably worked harder to breastfeed than you could ever imagine! Does my doctor need to write a prescription for formula for you to understand that some women JUST CAN’T DO IT!?!?!?

  9. JD says:

@Molly : Not all problems are reported by the companies. So not having a recall in the recent past, doesn’t guarantee anything ! :-)

@Dawn :Some women don’t produce enough breast milk and hence they go in for supplements.

  10. Kelly says:

Dawn – that’s pretty harsh. What about the moms who try their hardest to breastfeed and it doesn’t work? Would you rather have a baby go hungry than use formula? Obviously, breast milk is best and if it works should be used. However, this one or the other attitude needs to stop. Perhaps taking some of the pressure off new moms would help them to make that choice easier.
Also, you should lay off the swearing…especially if you’re a mom. If you’re not a mom then you have no idea and should keep your opinions to yourself!

  11. danielle says:

dawn….i think you are the slime ball. don’t be so insensitive.

  12. Molly says:

    Hey Dawn-
Do you talk like that around your kids? You sound really intelligent yourself. How about knowing facts before you go slamming people you don’t even know. All of my babies were breastfed for 6 MONTHS!!! Then unfourtunately some of us have to return to demanding jobs that don’t allow us the time to breastfeed. You sound like an idiot for making such broad statements and categorizing mother’s who use formula as in your words “slimeballs.” Get an education, your disgusting.

  13. Brian says:

Dawn, there are some of us who don’t have the benefit of having both parents living. The best thing is to watch what you type.

  14. Kate says:

Dawn- There are many mothers out there who do not have the option of breastfeeding their children, who are not lazy abnormal slimeballs. Adoptive mothers, for example or some mothers of preemies, or multiples or some mothers who are breast cancer survivors…the list goes on. You’ll notice that none of the mothers commenting above included their entire back history to “excuse” their use of formula. Anyway, is modeling a judgmental, hateful and foulmouthed attitude the BEST thing you can do for your child?? You may want to give your words a little thought before spouting off.

  15. Kelley says:

    Dawn-
I am not a slimeball. I had no choice but to to use formula because I had a breast reduction seven years prior to the birth of my child. I tried extremely hard to breastfeed my baby but my milk ducts does not produce as much milk due to the surgery. Be wise and mature about your comments.

  16. Saira says:

I agree that breastmilk is the best for babies and every mom should give it a try. However, some mom’s are not as lucky. My daughter was born through cesarean plus I had two severe kind of infection and for that I was on very strong pills. Plus my milk supply was very very low. Still I didn’t give up and took herbal medication plus prescription medicine, purchased $400 worth pump and pumped every hour but still no luck! Instead of starving my baby to death I was giving her formula. Dawn do you still think mom like me are lazy? It is just not you lots of other ppl also commented on me for giving my daughter formula? Pls be very careful before judging someone! Other ppl out there who is reading this pls don’t judge someone like Dawn did!

  17. Tara says:

Dawn-I hope you read all these comments…especially Brians. You weren’t thinking of mothers who may have passed or parents who have adopted. I will say a prayer for you and your children, since you obviously need it! To all the other Mom’s out there, we make the best choices for OUR children the best way we know how. No one persons choice is wrong or right! Good luck to all you mom’s and dad’s!

  18. J says:

Not only do a lot of women have problems producing enough milk, some babies have medial problems which prevent them from being able to tolerate breast milk. My baby had such a condition and could not drink my milk. Even though I had to feed him formula for the first 6 months, I continued to pump (until I dried up) and freeze my breast milk. He is now much better and can tolerate the milk, so we mix it with the formula so he can get the benefits of what I was able to pump. So in our case formula was a necessity.

  19. urallrobots says:

Yeah….Dawn. You should not use such icky words. We ,”coach” bag carrying, Betty’s prefer to bat our eyelashes and boast our silicone tata’s while we feed americas infants F#@*ING bugs. Whats wrong with you people? Who freakin cares about how much you spent on a pump! Or what color the milk from your left tit was! O.K…. so you may “have” to work and you obviously have to feed your child… you dont have to be so stupid!!! If your child could speak, what would he/she say???? WHY DID YOU FEED ME BUGS? Stand up! Get out your tit, your neighbors tit…. How about a cow or a goat? Whatever you do…… Get PISSED! And for all you bible toters……W.W.J.D ? well albeit, likely worded differently, he say the same……… stop facebooking, put the phone down, quit the P.T.O , cancel the soccer game be and feed your young! Oh yeah 1 more thing..Hey Similac…. SUCK A BEETLE D@*K! HOW DARE YOU!!!!!!!

  20. kenhev says:

I’ll never buy another product from Abbott Labs, This is down right unsafe for babies makes you wonder about what other products they make is tanted!!!!

  21. kate says:

This is such a terrible thing to have happened and worse for those parents wondering if there babiy could have been exposed to contaminated formula. With my 1st child I breast feeding was only for 6 months then Formula of course is the next best option to nursing, it is very rude of people to fault any woman who cannot nurse for her own private reasons. I have been able to and still nurse my 2nd child who is 1 1/2 year old and I am very fortunate to have been able to do this. PLease know that everyone is different and every baby is different, so passing judgement on another person is very immature and I think that its a terrible example for you child.
The sad fact is were all passing judgment on each other over a companys negligence, who we trust with the most precious little people in our lives to feed. I just hope no baby out there got sick from this.

  22. Joe Bhudda says:

    You’re all a bunch of Cu*ts!

  23. Patricia says:

my bab wont take enfamil he got used to similac but man they need to know who s watching what is beeing made …..how did bugs get in there anyways..maybe it wasnt that clean..

  24. Mom of two says:

Well Dawn, your comment was uncalled for, not all moms can breastfeed. Some moms can’t due to different reasons medication, can not express milk at all, adoptive parents, foster parents ect. the list goes on, I hope you read back to what you said , us as moms are not lazy because we don’t breast feed, as long as the baby is happy and healthy and fed is the main thing.

I hope everyone has come to find their right formula for their babies and if they were on the recall list, I pray the child(ren) are safe and still in good health. best wishes.

  25. Elizabeth says:

I agree with Dawn TO AN EXTENT. I do think that breastfeeding babies is what’s best for them. I have been lucky to be able to exclusively breastfeed my baby since she’s been born. I can see where she is coming from in what she is saying (though I don’t agree in how she cold heartedly expressed it). Many people that I know have used formula because it is “Easier.” And it has been people like that who have made me feel that some people are not ready to be mothers if they are choosing the easier route and are being lazy. I feel that if you can offer what’s best, then you shouldn’t be lazy about. I don’t feel anything should stop a mother from giving their child the best. And if you’re going to be lazy about how you raise your child then don’t have one. I though have no objection to formula fed babies because I understand why many do opt for that route. My nephew was formula fed and he is super smart and healthy. Putting all women into one category for having to use formula is just plain ignorant.

    • Elizabeth says:

And my nephew, was by the way, exclusively on Enfamil….which is why when and if I switch to formula Enfamil would be my choice of formula

  26. Bailey says:

Ladies DONT Worry about that Dawn B*TCH. She said do what Jesus gave you but then Jesus ALSO taught us NOT to Judge but thats what she is doing. Get back to talking about the Formula and what you came on here to talk about.. SCREW HER!

  27. mamaof3 says:

You were created to get pregnant, carry a baby to term (not prematurely c-sect baby out), and nurse a baby with the perfect balance of you breast milk, custom for your baby with all the natural and live antibodies, vitamins, DHA, just for your baby. You can’t sit there and complain about gassiness or irritability or bad stools and argue which chemicals are better to pump into baby.
soy is one of the top 8 allergens in the world, but companies looking for the cheapest junk to give your baby are still putting it in formula at an alarming rate!

Like my doctor told me,”Don’t ask me what formula to give a baby..That’s like asking me,’Should I feed my kid Burger King or McDonald’s’. It’s (formula) all junk food. Do what you want. Breast is best.”

    • Trisha says:

That’s incredibly harsh to say that formula is “junk food”. Your doctor must be about 100 years old to have made a comment like that. I work in a NICU where there are many sick babies and their moms do everything than can to provide breastmilk to their children. Some just can’t. I’m so glad it was so easy for you…but some mothers have severe complications that make it IMPOSSIBLE to breastfeed and they shouldn’t feel attacked or judged for having to provide formula. Hospitals wouldn’t give it to babies in a NICU if it was “junk food”. Yes, breastmilk is best…in an ideal situation in an ideal world. Stop making moms who already have enough to deal with feel worse about not being able to breastfeed.

  28. Mechele says:

Mamaof3, you are clearly either living in a perfect world, or you are delusional.

Not only can I NOT breastfeed because I am on three medications that I cannot live without, but when my water broke and I went into labor (right on time, week 40), I was unable to dialate completely, even with medication. After 24 hours of labor and no progress beyond 8cm, my doctor insisted on a C-section for the health of my baby.

My little girl is perfectly healthy, happy and well cared for. Your assumptions that every person can have a natural childbirth and breastfeed are naive, uninformed and immature. Shame on you. I hope you soon grow up.
